Sleep Apnea May Due to Obesity
Sleep apnea vs. obesity is a dangerous combination. Which came first? With sleep apnea, sleep is disturbed by intermittent episodes of NO breathing during the night. This leads to less oxygen in the blood and heart complications. It is also associated with daytime sleepiness and weight gain. 70% of obese people have sleep apnea. Since impaired sleep also causes weight gain, this info-graphic suggests that the primary defect in some obesity is the sleep disturbance itself. The more common thinking is the obesity causes the sleep apnea because in most people loss of weight the sleep apnea improves.
