Why Weight Loss is Needed: Overweight Is NEVER Healthy
Weight Loss is the Key to Longevity and Good Health- See Why:
Can you be overweight or obese and still be "healthy?" The answer is clear: NO, or not at least in the long run. The spare tire around you middle will catch up with you sooner or latter. Here is data on this subject from more than 5000 Massachusetts men and women who have been followed for more than 40 years - that's a lot of people for a very long time:
You really don't have to wait for 50 years, the answer is here now. The Framingham Heart Study followed 5209 adults from 1948 thru 1990. After more than 40 years of followup here is how obesity shortened life expectancy:
Weight Groups Life Expectancy at reaching 40 years:
Note that this study stretched from 1948 to 1990. During the first half of the study obesity was not as prevalent or so difficult to reverse. What would be the results if the study had started in the 1980's?
The recent European study of 10, 000 people followed for 10 years shows a direct, linear relationship of increasing belly size and DEATH--not an increase blood pressure, cholesterol or heart attacks, but actually death. The true measure of "health." Every 2 inch increase in waist size about 39 inches in a male increases death rate by 20%.
The Fat Acceptance Movement:
Why is there even a problem accepting this data even today? Much of the thought is based on the belief that most eating is emotional and that attempting to diet leads to more emotional disturbances.
The fat acceptance movement fails to realize that overweight people eat and drink because they are hungry and thirsty. For the most part, they gain weight because they simply make the wrong choices not because they have some emotional disturbance.
"Your o.k if you are fat:"
This fat acceptance movement received a real boost with the recent publication of University of California-Davis nutrition professor Linda Bacon’s book: Healthy at Every Size.
It’s fine to advocate to exercise “out of enjoyment and pleasure,” but the vast majority of people that want to lose weight hate exercise and if they will not exercise to save their lives why would they do it because someone says there is a “joy of moving "when they get no joy out of it?
"Ideal Weight" is a old concept from the 1940's:
That one’s healthy weight should be defined by the “ideal” weight tables (a relic of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Weight table from 1943), or the narrow ranges of the BMI table is rejected by Dr Bacon and many others in the fat acceptance movement and rightfully so.
People know what they should weigh:
We need to stop discouraging them from achieving their goal, as frustrating as the process may be, it only makes all of their problems worse. Advocating that one should “normalize eating” by stopping all restrictions just encourages pulling into the drive-thru at the first burger joint when confronted with hunger or satisfying thirst by gulping a 20 oz bottle of some sugary water drink when thirsty.
It's Simple, it's all about convenience, pleasure and price:
The problem is that most overweight people simply pick the wrong foods and drinks because they are hungry. The battle with obesity needs to be fought in the real world where convenience, pleasure and price dictate what most of us eat, not in the world of “more peaceful relationship with food” or in “rediscovering normal eating" - whatever that might be.
